Thales has launched a biometric border control device featuring both facial and iris recognition. Dubbed a biometric ‘Pod’, the compact device is designed to be easily affixed to an existing turnstile or gate, and can recognize pre-enrolled travellers from a distance of up to 1.5 meters, scanning face and iris biometrics in just two seconds.
“The combination of biometric patterns applied to contactless authentication, is a sought-after solution for many stakeholders to address security, operational and convenience challenges,” commented Thales’ VP of Identity and Biometric Solutions, Youzec Kurp. “Thales relies on its in-house biometrics, border and smart travel expertise to design, develop and deliver top tier responsible biometric solutions to meet users’ expectations and authorities’ requirements.”
The biometric Pod may help to further solidify Thales’ position in the global biometric border control market, and perhaps especially in Europe as authorities across various countries in the Schengen zone move to install biometric border control systems. Thales won a contract to provide the Spanish Ministry of Interior with biometric border screening technology earlier this year, a project in which it would work together with Madrid-based telecommunications services provider Zelenza.
